Treasures of Split & Trogir

UNESCO listed historic heritage

Our private tour starts in Split where our guide will meet you at your hotel for a walking tour of historic Split – meaning the Diocletian's Palace. Initially built as the Roman Emperor Diocletian's retirement home, it was subsequently turned into a city where 3000 people live still today! The streets and alleyways you will walk, one of the finest examples of the architecture of the late Empire, have been inhabited 1700 years ago! From 12 sphinxes that the Romans brought from Egypt to remarkably preserved Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque palaces, Diocletian's Palace is a treasure to discover.

Our chauffeur will wait for you at the promenade to continue, with your guide, to the 20 minutes away Trogir. Another historical gem of the Adriatic! This island oasis connected to the mainland with a bridge is filled with Greek, Roman and Venetian influences. Most of the town walls that were once used as protection are preserved and the old center of Tragurium was formed in the 13th century.

The entrance to St. Lawrence cathedral is decorated by the Romanesque portal of Radovan, the most significant of its kind in this part of Europe. Visit the Palace of Cipico, home to one of Trogir's most prominent families and the Tower of Kamerlengo, which served as the Venetian governor's palace. Discover the masterpieces of local sculptors and others who participated in creating the magnificent visual history of this charming town before heading back to Split.
OPTIONAL: Dalmatian wine and delicacies tasting (light lunch) at picturesque Kastela en route from Split to Trogir.

Portal of Radovan

One of the most impressive monuments of Trogir (and all of Croatia) stone sculpting is the Western Portal to Trogir Cathedral, known as Master Radovan's. Likely the most important monument of the Croatian medieval art was completed almost a 150 years later after it was signed by Master Radovan in 12340.
Among numerous symbolic representations, it is interesting how, on the front side of the pilasters along the door, is an incomplete cycle of the months (March and April on the left, December, January and February on the right), shown through associated earthly activities and appropriate zodiacal signs. While holding onto the religious frameworks of the Romanesque, this work adds a lot of humanity to it, opening the door for a new time to come.
