Wine Cellars of Istria

Unique wine experience in Istria

The secrets of Croatian wines are slowly coming to international attention, but with more than 130 indigenous grape varieties and a wine tradition dating back thousands of years, there is plenty to discover for the curious wine-lover.
The most developed region in Croatia's emerging wine scene is, without a doubt, the Istrian peninsula in the north, where wine is considered one of the symbols which defines the region's identity. Join us on the Secret Dalmatia Exclusive Wine Cellars of Istria Tour to learn more about the region's finest wines and indigenous grapes, and to savor the spectacular beauty of the vineyards rolling down the Istrian hills - the essential part of the tour.
One of the most exciting aspects of the Croatian wine scene is the diversity of both climate and soil, which allows for highly individual wines. You will encounter some familiar sorts along the way - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Muscat, but also some of the best quality local varieties, amongst which Malvasia is the true Istrian pride.
Our tour takes us through the very heart of the Istrian wine peninsula, and comprises private tastings with three of the top producers. We start in the wine cellar of Croatia's renowned winemaker, Ivica Matošević, sampling his passion filled wines and a selection of local delicacies.
Following is a seafood lunch accompanied by a glass or two of local wine at the picturesque Lim Fjord, before heading off to our second appointment, the stunning Vizinda and the outstanding assortment of the Pilato family, a treat in store for Chardonnay lovers, as well as one of the best examples of the local Malvasia. Our final stop combines art with wine at the home of the Arman family, who have been practicing the art of wine making since the late 1880s!

Malvazija Istarska or Malvasia Istriana is an indigenous Istrian grape variety and one of the most popular wines in Croatia. The wine is a pale yellow, straw color with a touch of green.
The general aroma of malvazija is floral and fruity, while the taste is crisp, fresh and pleasantly acidic. Malvazija is an ideal match for seafood and pasta dishes. It can also be enjoyed on its own, of course.
Best known producers are Arman, Pilato, Matosevic, Trapan, Kozlovich, Piquentum...
