Join your guide to explore the unique area tucked in the hills above Split where time has stood still. Through his stories, told over a hike and a meal, you will learn about how life was lived here for centuries, remaining largely unchanged to the present day. By the fireside, surrounded by a wonderful collection of historical objects that chef Rino keeps in his home, round off your day with the specialties of this area prepared by Rino, all the while entertaining you with his wonderful stories.

Tour description

Starting from Split, travel with your chauffeur behind the mountain ridges of Split, to the wilds of the Dalmatian hinterland, and the very special and ancient village Truše. Inhabited by only a few people, this is where you will meet your guide and chef Rino, the young and talented chef who came back to this area after living the city life, feeling compelled to return to his roots and to explore traditional tastes of his ancestral home.

Rino will welcome you at his tavern, a traditional Dalmatian stone house built over two centuries ago when the structures were made to last. At the end of the village, his home is the beautiful beginning of a hike you will take together, walking up the hillside which shelters Truše. Walk along the ridge to the top, adorned by the tiny church of Our Lady of the Snow, named for the snow which fell on the day when the church was rebuilt. The views from here are nothing short of breath-taking: barren hinterland on one side, rolling as far as the Bosnian mountain peaks, contrasted by the serene Adriatic on the other, glistening in turquoise sparkle and sprinkled with Dalmatian islands. This contrast of divine beauty and rugged rocks holds the truth of the harsh, but genuine livelihoods in this area far from urban. 

The stories will continue around an open fireplace, called 'komin' the most important place for any household in the rural Dalmatia: where you can poke the fire and sample domestic wine, homemade smoked ham, and cheeses. You will have the chance to try the local specialty 'soparnik' from the Poljica region, complimented with other local specialties that dear Rino will prepare in front of you, his guests of honor.

This simple but tasty dish is very local to the Dalmatian hinterland, originating from the region between Split and Omiš called Poljica. Like a flatbread that is filled with chard, onions, and garlic it is prepared in large round shapes like a stuffed pizza and baked under hot coals on an open hearth. During Roman times it was regarded as a poor man's food but now it is getting the praise it has waited for and has been declared to be of intangible cultural heritage in Croatia. There is a festival in the town of Dugi Rat entirely devoted to soparnik.
