The winemaker's wine tour of Pelješac

Croatia’s second largest peninsula, the elongated Pelješac, is an incredibly scenic territory which has nurtured its foodie traditions for over a thousand years now. Oyster shells were found together with Roman ruins, showing that an appreciation of the region’s succulent aphrodisiac existed even in the ancient times. The strikingly serene bay of Mali Ston by the isthmus of Pelješac today nurtures the country’s most famous mussel and oyster farms. The peninsula road further swirls through immense stone walls, built to protect the salt pans of Ston, once treated as pure gold and then winds on through the elongated rural region of villages and vineyards, where some of the most intriguing red wines of Europe thrive.

Tour description

Some 45-minute drive from Dubrovnik, the picturesque area of Pelješac is home to some of the most intriguing red wines in Europe. Hosted by Mario Bartulović, a renowned Croatian wine-maker, this is a superb opportunity to learn about the country and its traditions, especially the art of winemaking, from a true local. The tour is a trio of wine-tastings at Croatia's most respected wine cellars, visits to vineyards on the slopes of this magnificent peninsula and a delicious, traditional Dalmatian lunch at your host's family winery.

Our first experience on Pelješac is the Miloš winery, home of the charismatic poet/winemaker Frano Miloš. Here you will have a chance to taste his red Miloš Plavac or his, now legendary, Stagnum, also a red, made of 100% Plavac Mali grapes. The visit to Miloš winery is the ultimate introduction to Pelješac.

Next, we visit the Grgic winery in Trstenik. Miljenko Grgich studied wine-making in Zagreb. After migrating to the US, with only $20 in his pocket, he founded the famous Grgich Hills winery in Napa Valley but not before he made a name for himself being part of Chateau Montelena success story in the 70s! At the Grgic cellars, on top of hills overlooking the charming Trstenik harbor, you will taste their famous white Pošip and their red Plavac Mali Dingač.

Our final sojourn will be to the 500-year-old wine cellar of Bartulović family, of your host Mario. By this time, it will feel like visiting a friend's house. Here you will enjoy a wine-tasting and a superb traditional Croatian luncheon, accompanied by their great wines!

Please note that this is much more than a wine tour. This is a cultural program with wine as the main theme but this program offers a great insight into local life and traditions of this unique region. You can choose to further custom-tailor your program, including an oyster tasting in Ston or other wineries in the region.

Dingač

Sidebar Image 400x400

Dingač is a wine growing region on the Pelješac Peninsula, possibly the best wine growing region in Croatia. Established in 1961, this small area between the villages of Trstenik and Podobuče was the first protected Croatian wine region and is known for the native Croatian red wine grape, Plavac Mali.
Like the neighboring Postup region, the land is rugged karst with little top soil. In addition to 2800 sun hours annually, 45 - 55 degree slopes make Dingač an ideal red wines region. Vineyards are planted from sea level up to 300m and all the wines derived from this area are eligible for a "stamp of geographic origin", meaning they meet a series of strict requirements. Notable producers of Dingač region wines include: Miloš, Grgich, Korta Katarina, Vinarija Dingač, Bura-Mokalo, Kiridžija...
