Zadar

Discover the region of national parks and historic treasures!

Quickly gaining attention on the international travel scene, the ‘sunset’ city of Zadar is vibrant and attractive, with a unique personality. An exceptional combination of ancient and contemporary side by side, much of the city’s character derives from its complex and turbulent past. Roman ruins sit quietly next to a modern cafe, Romanesque and Gothic churches jostle with modern art in the streets, and a striking waterfront promenade houses two modern installations. Perched right on the coast, with a well-preserved ancient past, and lively arts, music and culture, this north Dalmatian town rightfully enjoys the reputation of an up-and-coming European star.

Experienced polar guide Paola Palavecino is fresh from a season in Antarctica to bring birdwatchers to the Zadar hinterland – a bird corridor between Africa and Northern Europe. These wetland and coastal areas are rich with birdlife and biodiversity – with over 250 species recorded at Vrana Lake.

Completely untouched by man, the jeweled walls of Modrič cave conceal a silence and darkness so rarely present in the modern-day realm. Huge stalactites and stalagmites decorate the floors and the ceilings adding a touch of out worldly to an already wondrous experience! Located near Zadar, yet situated nicely off the beaten path, this incredible cave was discovered unexpectedly in the early 1980s by a speleologist who was searching for shelter from the strong bura winds after his bike broke down.  What serendipity, as Modrič cave is a wonderful hidden world of subterranean shapes and forms.

One of our most thought-provoking and poignant tours focuses on the first half of the 1990s when the city of Zadar and its surroundings were strongly affected during the fierce Croatian War for Independence. Zadar was a focal point during the conflict and faced some of the most tragic days in all of its 3,000 years long history such as the siege which had kept the city without water and power for months. Countless marks of devastation stayed behind as reminders, yet it will be the stories and personal accounts that will resonate with you on this private tour. Along with a greater understanding of the complex triggers of the war, you will gain respect for the people of the region who bounced back from near destruction to again become a vibrant and beautiful destination.

Meet the pioneer of contemporary Croatian winemakers, Alen Bibić. His name often comes attached to the famous regional white wine, Debit, that he himself brought back from the realm of table wines, adorning it with newfound respect. Alen obviously did something right when he revived his grandfather’s vineyards which were decimated during the 1990’s war, as his revolutionary blends soon made him the first Croatian winemaker to export to the US. His passion and knowledge on wine production, as well as the gourmet magic he creates in tandem with his wife Vesna, were recognized by Anthony Bourdain, resulting in Bibich and Skradin being featured as one of the Croatian highlights on the famous ‘No Reservations’.
