Tour description

Take part in the medieval archery class in the incredible setting of Klis Fortress that sits high on a cliff above Split and was also a set for the famous Game of Thrones series!

You will be met by your guide and chauffeur to depart to Klis, an important historical fortress that towers above the village of the same name. From its origin as a small stronghold built by the ancient Illyrian tribe Dalmatae, eventually growing into the royal castle and seat of many Croatian kings, to its final development as a large fortress during the Ottoman wars in Europe, Klis has guarded the frontier. Situated at the most vital passage and the crossroad of the trading routes between the coast and inner Bosnia, Klis was a coveted target, invaded and conquered several times throughout its two-thousand-years-long history. Most recently it has risen again in newfound popularity since it was chosen as one of the locations for the Game of Thrones television series.

In this atmospheric setting you will be greeted by your hosts, members of the Uskok militia reenactment group, who will be dressed in fully accurate medieval attire. Walk through the impressive fortress and its grounds and enjoy a demonstration of traditional swordsmanship. Privately instructed medieval archery class will follow. Learn about different types of bows and arrows, their history, different uses and how to properly handle them. Complete your archery class with shooting a target and see who hits the bullseye first and wins the title of the best medieval man around!

A quick trip from Split, this is also a great family excursion to compliment your experience of Croatia and its fascinating history.

The infamous Uskok pirates

Sidebar Image 400x400

Uskok pirates waged war on the Ottoman invasion and ruled the Adriatic Sea in the 16th and 17th centuries. Originally from the inland, the pirates eventually  migrated to the sea once they realized profit potential of pillaging the goods from the Venetian merchant ships that traveled the coast. With time they became the most famous marauding pirates of the Adriatic known for their cunning ways for luring ships up the narrow channels to trap them and for the skill of navigating the indented coast of Dalmatia.
