Island of Olives and Honey

Explore Šolta island and its tradition of honey and olive oil production

The golden elixirs of Šolta! Experience and taste the award-winning olive oils and the famous honeys made from wild rosemary flowers that cover the island, both longstanding traditions still persisting today on Šolta island. Only a short distance from Split, Šolta is a Mediterranean paradise of ancient olive groves and sleepy villages tucked away in the hills, enveloped in a meandering coast, just a heaven for sailboats. This relaxing and engaging excursion brings you over to the island to spend a day with the locals proud of their craft and traditions, introducing you to the famous Dalmatian lifestyle called 'pomalo'. Literally translating to 'take it easy’ and ultimately meaning ‘slow down, relax, take in the moment' this philosophy is perfectly embodied by the natural beauty and the charming people of Šolta.

Tour description

A quick ferry trip and you are on the blissful island of Šolta that seems worlds away from the urban buzz of Split. With a sleepy Dalmatian charm it is ideal for a day of soaking up what makes island life so unique! By the end of the day the infectious charm of the local living will have rubbed off on you for sure.

Upon arrival to the island you will be greeted by Mr. Kaštelanac for a private tour of the Olynthia Olive Mill where both traditional and modern techniques of production will be presented in an engaging walk through the premises. Well-known for their sustainable development efforts and dedication to preserving the old traditions of olive tree planting and harvesting, Olynthia produces some superior olive oils that you will have to the opportunity to taste - especially unique are the oils infused with lemon, rosemary, garlic and wild Dalmatian herbs!

This tour further takes you to the residence of the Tvrdić family. Third generation beekeepers will introduce you to the process of honey production and welcome you to the sampling of their carefully crafted varieties and flavors. As an option, it is possible to visit the family beehives in the hill or to make your own honey! On the farm you will also enjoy a home-cooked Dalmatian meal paired with some great local wines, of course!

Use the remainder of your time to explore Šolta on your own, swim in the crystal clear Adriatic or enjoy another favorite local activity, a cup of coffee in the village of Maslinica, glancing at the marina centered in front of the impressive Martinis Marchi castle.

Island of Olives and Honey, September 2016

Dear Vlasta and Alan,

We couldn't have been more pleased with our experience with Secret Dalmatia, from our first phone call from Alan, until we were picked up promptly at the hotel and delivered to the airport in Dubrovnik to return home.

You chose terrific hotels for us. They were all clean, adequately spacious for our needs and located perfectly -- considering factors such as noise, access to city center attractions and our ability to walk to the best sites.

The guides were all prompt, friendly, professional and had a great sense of humor which we appreciated. The drivers were welcoming, helpful in orienting us to the area and added the personal touch of allowing us to learn about their home and work lives in Croatia.
