Tour description

Your moderate level mountain bike tour of Hvar will take you to the interior charms of the island. Beginning with a shuttle ride (20 min.) from Hvar town to the pretty seaside village of Milna, you will set off on your bikes there and continue to Malo Grablje, abandoned village situated below the cliffs. Malo Grablje is a perfect spot for a break to explore the cluster of ancient stone buildings and narrow alleys slowly being taken over by nature, cloaked in the aromatic scent of Mediterranean herbs filling the air.

Continue uphill towards Velo Grablje, another lovely village with the current population of only a dozen people. The hidden location, the dramatic setting backed by cliffs, traditional architecture and the stories of Velo Grablje make it one of the most interesting villages on Hvar Island. You will hear the story of lavender growing and production of its oils which peaked in the 20th century, making Velo Grablje the island’s largest producer. Today, there are only a few people involved.

The interior of the island is rich in Mediterranean fruits, herbs and plants so as you pedal along, enjoy sights of carob, fig, almond trees, pomegranate, lemons and wild oranges. Enjoy a pleasant break for some rest and photos before starting on your downhill descent to Brusje, with more stunning views along the way.

Once a sheepherders’ village, now famous for its wines, olive oils and honey, the tiny Brusje has an authentic, rural Dalmatian atmosphere. From this point in your journey, you will have two options for the remainder of your tour and your return route to Hvar city. The easier route travels downhill on a paved road – or you may choose the slightly more challenging gravel road route. Your tour will end with a hearty traditional lunch in a local tavern.

Revival of Hvar inland villages

Sidebar Image 400x400

Thanks to the rise in rural tourism, the dedication of ambitious locals and funding from the EU and Split-Dalmatia county, the abandoned inland villages of Hvar – such as Malo and Velo Grablje, Humac, Zoraće and Brusje - have been a part of a project which aims to bring them back to life. Not only working to save the village structures, nonprofit groups promote the local heritage through special events and festivals, bringing life to these villages and celebrating the traditions such as lavender production. The ultimate goal is to protect and restore the original hand-built Dalmatian buildings of the villages, prevent the selling of the land and further stimulate rural tourism in the area.
