River Cetina canyon is a mecca for outdoors adventures such as river rafting, fresh water kayaking, ziplining, canyoning, cycling and hiking. Equally exhilirating is the tumultuous and fascinating history of this region - centuries of rivalry, famously vicious pirates, maurauding Ottoman turks and the Illyrian tribes that once ruled the region. The narrow passages in the canyon were a history making gateway and bridge that connected the important trade routes of the coast to the inland, empire to empire. Its strategic and pivotal position also made this region the heartland of the ancient Illyrian civilization that left behind their monumental fortresses and burial mounds. At the mouth of the river, the infamous Omiš pirates would lure passing merchant ships to pillage them of their cargo, and were some of the most feared pirates on the Adriatic Sea.
