Vis Island Discovery

Vis Island Discovery

When: Year round

Duration: Half day (4-5 hours with lunch)

From: Perfect for people on yachts visiting Vis! Day trips from Hvar and Split area available as well.

The unspoiled, rugged island of Vis, just 60 miles away from the Italian coast, rises majestically out of the Adriatic, crowned by its three mountains.  Vis has always been an island of fishermen and winegrowers and is loved for its beautiful beaches, nature, ecological agriculture, traditional architecture and as the place where Marshall Tito directed the partisans from his secret cave here during WW2.

Our tour begins on the road to Komiža, a charming village on the south side of the island that many historians consider to be the cradle of fishing in the Adriatic.  The approach is spectacular, with sweeping panoramic views and beautiful light.  We’ll take a walk down to the waterfront and Komiža’s main square.  Be sure to take some photos of Zonkos Palace, a beautiful Venetian style villa. We continue exploring the town by following its main street, Ribarska ulica, (Fishermen's Street), and the narrow alleys that bring us to the Fishermen0s Museum, originally a fortress built in the 16th century.

As we continue our way, passing through the centuries-old vineyards, we’ll reach the famous Tito's Cave. About 200 steps take us up to the first cave (used as a meeting point of

for Tito and his allies - British and Americans) and then another 100 take us to the second Cave where he used to work and sleep. Ready for lunch, we’ll stop in the village of Podšpilje where there’s an excellent restaurant that also offers us a chance to taste Vis’s intriguing wine. Continuing through the center of the island we come to the island’s biggest valley, where there used to be a Royal British Airfield ( the pillars with red and white stripes that used to mark the runway can still be seen). At the top of the hill, called Križ / The Cross, the road turns to take us back to Vis town—but not without some final wonderful panoramic vistas of the glorious bay.

Authentic Vis lunch on a wonderful traditional farm is included!

The tour can be combined with a visit to former Yugoslav army submarine tunnels and visit to British memorial graveyard built in the 19th century after the famous Battle of Lissa between the British Admiral Hoste and French Napoleonic fleet!
