Plitvice, with its luminous lakes and spectacular waterfalls, is one of the most popular destinations in this part of Europe! The waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have, over thousands of years, deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams which in turn have created a series of 16 beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species. The entire area around the lakes so lush and wildy pristine that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1979.The lakes and the park are conveniently located near the main road that connects Zagreb with the Adriatic Coast which enables us to offer tours from all regions of Croatia except the islands and Dubrovnik. According to legend, Plitvice's lakes were created after a long period of drought. Longing for relief, people, animals and nature prayed for their salvation. A Black Queen appeared and along with her came a strong wind that began to blow furiously. Soon afterwards the rain poured down in such volumne that it created lakes.

The lake system is divided into the upper lakes and the lower lakes. The highest of them is Prošcansko Lake (639m) and the lowest is Novakovica Brod (503m).

The upper lakes, surrounded by thick forests and interlinked by numerous waterfalls, lie in a dolomite valley, while the lower lakes, smaller and shalower, surrounded only by sparse underbrush, lie on the limestone bedrock. The lakes receive most of their water from rivers called Black River and White River. After it rushes past the Sastavci waterfall on the lower lakes, water continues to flow to the Korana River and the Plitvice brook, dropping from an elevation of 76m. Around the lakes and along Korana there are 14 caves.

The Lake areas are lovely and cool in summer, icy and calm in winter, yellow and ochre in autumn, green and fresh in spring. The water temperature in Prošcansko Lake and Kozjak reaches even 24°C in summer. The whole region is covered with snow from November till the end of March.  In December and January, all the lakes freeze over creating a magical winter landscape.

Sport shoes are highly recommended for this program!

Options

Tour of the National Park Plitvice can be arranged as a specific scientific visit wether you are interested in learning more on regions flora or fauna. We also offer horseback riding tour of remote parts of the park. There is also an option of combination tour of Plitvice with stay in local log cabins or apartments. The tour can run from almost all areas of Croatia. Village of Rastoke can be included as well.
