Mostar is the historic center of  Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina - a mysterious country in the heart of the Western Balkans. The city has many faces, layers: Orient meets West on the banks of gleaming, turquoise  Neretva river in a blend of oriental architecture, Mediterranean scents and riggid Balkan beauty. Of course, the main attraction is its world-famous bridge – Stari Most od Old Bridge, although visitors soon find themselves immersed in other sights around its Ottoman Old Town such as the Old Bazaar, the Turkish House and one of the many fascinating mosques which have stood in this city for hundreds of years. 

In the markets many Turkish trinkets can be found - coffee and tea sets, copperwork, rugs, slippers and fezs. The best food is typically Bosnian - burek (meat or cheese filled filo pastry) or ćevapčići (dish of grilled minced meat of oriental origin served with pita and onion).

The current bridge was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1557 and built in 9 years by Mimar Hayruddin. It replaced an earlier wooden suspension bridge. It is made of local stone known as tenelija. During the war in Bosnia Herzegovina (1992-1995), on 9th November 1993, the bridge was destroyed. After reconstruction it was reopened on 23rd July 2004.The local sport of diving from the bridge dates back to the time the bridge was built, but the first recorded instance is from 1664. The diving platform is over 20 metres above the water, but the river is only 3 metres deep! Plus the temperature of the water is freezing - the shock of entering it on a hot summer’s day has been known to cause heart-attacks.

The program starts at 8 AM when your driver comes for you to your Dubrovnik area hotel (apartment or villa). The tour of Mostar is a full day tour. Not only does the trip include our English-speaking driver/guide but also the entrance fees famous Turkish house museum as well as a local,  Mostar guide. Lunch at the delightful Shadrvan restaurant, only metres from the bridge, is a welcome extra not included in the cost of the tour and the driver would be happy to stop at picturesque Počitelj on your way back to Croatia...
