Walking Tour of Hvar Town

Hvar, the island of sun and wine! From your hotel, we’ll begin at Hvar’s lively medieval port town, filled with luxuriant color and splendid architecture and framed alongside a cobalt sea. Returning along Ivanića, the stunning Renaissance Benedictine Convent is on your right, and beyond it the surviving spire of an ancient Dominican Monastery ruin, long a sailor’s landmark. Continuing down you’ll glimpse an unfinished (but delicately carved) palace possibly commissioned by the Hektorović family. The graceful area below, the heart of the harbor, merges with St. Stephen’s Square, an evocative expanse flanked by the sixteenth century Cathedral from which it takes its name. Then we’ll continue to the Venetian Arsenal, on the Square’s south side, the site of Hvar’s public theater. Built in 1612 it’s the second oldest in Europe. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to catch a performance! We'll save Hvar’s greatest architectural monument until the end of our tour. As we stroll past the port’s vibrant Riva, there it is, in all of its waterside glory--the Franciscan Monastery with its simple church, built in 1583. A magical finish to the unique beauty that makes our walking tour of Hvar so immensely popular.

Scents of Hvar

A walking tour of the sights, scents and tastes of Hvar Island. Join local botanist on a magical walk through Hvar’s lush hills and valleys. Along the way, he will share his botanical wisdom and help you gather a variety of herbs to introduce you to a new world of aromatic wonders. The walk ends with a marvelous picnic lunch in an olive grove owned by one of the Croatia’s premier olive oil producers. We’ll also get an amazing view of Hvar’s 2,234 year-old Stari Grad Plain, an agricultural landscape first created by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century BC. It has been continuously used to grow grapes and olives to the present day. In 2008, in recognition of this, its vitually intact organization system based on geometrical parcels with dry stone wall boundaries (chora) and the very first by a rainwater recovery system involving the use of tanks and gutters, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.. Our walking tour of the sights, scents and tastes of Hvar Island walking tour begins at your hotel front office or concierge desk where you will be picked up by an air-conditioned car or van and taken to the starting point.
