Walking Tours of Dubrovnik

When: Year Round
Duration:
2 - 4 hours
From:
Dubrovnik area, Korčula, Montenegro, Split

Dubrovnik has captivated kings and commoners alike for centuries. It’s the quintessential walled city of legend—proud, grand, and ancient. With its signature red and orange clay rooftops and massive stone ramparts framed by the dazzling blue Adriatic, our tour of Dubrovnik is the ultimate treat for visitors who want to see beyond the obvious and explore the architecture and history of this fabled city. Join us as we discover Dubrovnik and its golden age. Our discovery begins as we enter the Old Town through the Pile Gate. Along the way we will visit St. Savior’s, a grandiose Franciscan and Dominican church. Next we will admire one of the crown jewels of Dubrovnik, Knezev Dvor, the Rector’s Palace. If you are fortunate enough to be in Dubrovnik during its celebrated Music Festival, standing in the palace’s central courtyard listening to a stunning classical concert under the stars is an unforgettable Dubrovnik experience. One of the real highlights of our walking tour is the famous Pharmacy at the Franciscan Monastery (1317). Inside is a fascinating collection of decorated jars filled with ancient remedies; unique measurement devices, together with alembics and mortars. The Monastery, which also houses a museum with an excellent art collection, took a century to build and was almost completely destroyed in the tragic earthquake of 1667.

Judaic Tour of Dubrovnik

Despite the small size of Dubrovnik's Old Town, the synagogue here has global significance. It's the second oldest oldest Sephardic synagogue in the world, established in the 14th century and rebuilt in 1652. The Jewish immigrants quickly established themselves as merchants dealing in fabrics, silk, wool, leather, and spices. By 1614 the Jews of Dubrovnik were so much a part of the fabric of Dubrovnik that the Senate gave concessions to encourage them to live here permanently. Less than a decade later, however, the increased pressure from the Catholic church and the changing sentiments of the local population had reduced the Jewish population to just four families. Today there are only a handful of Jews still living here and the synagogue is mostly a museum--but from time to time prayer services are still held. We will start our special tour in front of Onofrio's fountain and continue along the main street Stradun, towards Zudioska (Jewish) Street where the Jewish community once  lived. Then we will visit the synagogue and its remarkably well-preserved and historically significant interior. In ghetto times, the alley was closed at the top. At the lower end, near the sign Zudioska ulica, ghetto traffic was controlled by a gate, which no longer exists. The synagogue was established in 1408 in a narrow three-storied stone building dating from the fourteenth century and looks today very much like it did 600 years ago. Access to the women's gallery behind the high wooden grilles is through the adjacent house, the home of Emilio Tolentino.

Discover the hidden gems of Dubrovnik with Dubrovniktravelady!

In the 2.5 hours we have together I will share with you the Hidden Gems of what makes Dubrovnik so special.
This UNESCO protected site was selected not only for its history and culture, but for its heart to rebuild and maintain its character, come with me to hear and learn how special this town is. Entering the Pile Gate into the old town, our first stop will be the Franciscan monastery which houses the second oldest pharmacy in Europe. As we continue our walk down the Stradun (main promenade) we will stop at the Sponza to see the memorial to the fallen from the 1991 Homeland War. Then we will visit the Rectors Palace to view a special display of our recently restored green men. A visit to the farmers market will give you the opportunity to purchase some of our locally made goodies, such as honey, olive oil or a sweet fragrant sachet of lavender to put under your pillow for a good night’s sleep. Weaving through our back streets we will proceed to the well-known watering hole, Buza Bar.
You can return here before sunset to watch the sun sink into the sea while enjoying local drinks. We will continue to wind our way through the oldest part of town to our next stop. The Rupe shares the historic culture of the region, filled with historical tools used by my ancestors as they tilled the earth, grew grapes and made wine and olive oil. In addition, a perfect photo of the old town from the second floor window is a must of your Dubrovnik Hidden Gem experience and one few people will experience.
Once again on the Stradun we will stroll the main promenade. Since shopping is an event many people enjoy, I will take you to several wonderful shops where you can find locally made quality items to remember your day in Dubrovnik. Among them are very good book shops, a specialty handmade hat shop, art pieces at several galleries and several handcrafted jewelry shops including one for our filigree Konavle jewelry. We will leave the town through the Ploce Gate and stroll to the Lazreti. This was one of the first quarantine centers in Europe. Then I will show you how to reach the Cable Car station. Now that you have walked through the old town with me and leanred its history, getting a bird's eye view will put it all in perspective as well as giving you great photo opportunities. Dubrovnik, itself is a piece of art, enjoy!
