Today's Croatian artists are a vibrant breed of traditionalists as well as iconoclasts. We have chosen three distinctive contemporary artists whose ateliers and galleries are all located within the walls of Diocletian's Palace or close by.
Boris Sokol is an impressionist oil painter whose atelier is on the island of Solta and is represented by Gallery Moric in Split. His first exhibition took place in 1983, in Frankfurt am Main. He has had many solo shows in Germany, where he lived for many years, as well group exhibitions there and in Croatia. Sokol’s work focuses on the dreamlike quality of the ever changing light that is part of the magic of Solta’s magical landscapes.
Srecko Zitnik, also a painter, is known for his bold, imaginative use of color. His rich palette transforms everyday objects into joyous expressions and landscapes into wonderlands. We will enjoy his big bold-colored oil paintings in his gallery hidden in a narrow side street off the Peristil. His critically-acclaimed "Colors of Holland" one man show launched an international career that now includes more than 35 solo and group exhibitions.
Pavo Majic, a graphic artist, is also internationally known for his striking designs and originality. Pavo is the founder of the International Biennale Exhibition in Split which attracts designers from all over the world. We will visit all three of these artists and in Pavo Majic's Naranca Gallery, a wonderful tri-level space built into the actual north wall of the Palace, where we will enjoy champagne with Dalmatian delicacies on bruschetta.
